The Chinese Junk Keyring.
The Chinese Junk Keyring. Length 160 feet, breadth 33 feet, depth of hold 16 feet, burthen about 800 Tons.
London J.T. Wood Holywell St. Strand
[c.1850]
Zinc engraving, sheet 115 x 150mm (4½ x 6"). Foxing at edges.
The Chinese junk, Keying, which sailed from China to England and the United States (via the Cape of Good Hope) between 1846 and 1848. Probably published to coincide with its arrival in British waters in 1848. The ship subsequently sailed on to the US; even though the ship’s captain Charles Alfred Kellett (b.1812) did not plan to stop in New York City, he found himself off-course and eventually anchored in Battery Park, a resort for racing, sports, ice-skating and fashion. The ship remained for nine days in New York and over 7000 people a day paid 25 cents each to board the boat to examine its cabins and observe the crew. The American publishers Currier & Ives made a similar print to this one to commemorate the arrival of the ship in New York.

[Unidentified ship, previously thought to be the 'Coonatto']
TGD [artist's monogram T. G. Dutton] 506.
[London, William Foster, 15th July 1863.]
Tinted lithograph with hand colour, proof before letters. Image 405 x 595mm (16 x 23¼").
The Coonatto, a three-masted ship of 633 tons, built in London by Thomas Bilbé in 1863. Used as an Australian wool clipper, the name is an Aboriginal word for a food-bearing tree. In 1876 the Coonatto ran aground on rocks under the Seven Sisters in Sussex, where some of her iron remains can still be seen at low tide. Her captain, Captain Hillman, had his certificate suspended for three months for negligence, although there was speculation he wrecked the Coonatto for insurance money. However as his next ship, the 'Inch Kenneth' foundered the following year, killing Hillman, it would seem he was just inept.

Revenue Cutters have patrolled our coastline for more than 300 years. From the early days of sail up to the modern high speed diesels. Revenue Cutter Vigilant, always referred to as a Cutter and never a Yacht, was the fastest sailing vessel on the Solent in 1826. Lithograph with hand colouring. Very fine. Printed area: 315 x 450mm (12½ x 17¾"). Framed.
Founded as the Port of Plymouth Royal Clarence Regatta Club in 1827, the Royal Western Yacht Club was founded in 1833. Its original aims were to hold an annual regatta, to organise an active social programme and to stimulate improvements in naval architecture through yacht racing, and the Club still holds to the principles of those original aims today. In those early years the Club's principal strength proved to be in long distance cruising. Its members' yachts, wearing the Blue Ensign, a privilege given to them in a Warrant granted by Queen Victoria, were to be seen in the farthest corners of the globe, from France and St Petersburg to Cape Town, Ceylon, South America and the USA. At the same time the Club's active involvement in racing grew consistently. As well as running an annual regatta the Club was soon organising an annual series of races for J Class Yachts, an event which continued for over 100 years until 1934. After Nicholas Matthew Condy (1818 - 1851).
